The trust has accepted Bill Harris and Erina Stockman’s decisions to resign as Ngaati Apakura Runanga Trust trustee and secretary with great reluctance. We gratefully acknowledge the long commitment through leadership and hard work that both have given, not only to the trust but also to Te Waha aa Tuaraa. They can take pride in their roles in some wonderful milestones, including negotiations with Te Arawhiti on land at 61 Rangiaowhia resulting that have seen it returned to the iwi, Waikato Regional Authority applications on land at Wairoto, and discussions with agencies around historical sites at Maatakitaki Paa, Kaipaka Paa and Wairoto. We wish you both well on your next journey.
Trustees have met and appointed a new executive committee, Orrin Kapua stepping up as chair, George Griggs accepting the role as deputy, and Julia Martin continuing as financial officer. First harvest on traditional whenua in 160 years
Last year, the Anglican church purchased ten acres at Rangiaowhia outside of Te Awamutu, with the intention of enabling its return to Ngāti Apakura.
The hapū is currently leasing the land from the church, allowing them to harvest from their traditional whenua for the first time in 160 years.
Ngāti Apakura lost the land in the violent attack at Rangiaowhia in 1864, and it's hoped the harvest will be a step towards restoration of the whenua and hapū.

Following the unsuccessful bid at the recent auction, Archbishop Phillip Richardson said “an opportunity arose for a discussion with the successful bidder, which in turn has led to the land being on-sold”
This is fantastic news and is a significant step forward for all Ngāti Hinetuu, Ngāti Apakura and the Anglican Church.
Te Awamutu News and journalist Benjamin Wilson explains in this article (linked below) what this “remarkable turnaround” means for us as we acknowledge and celebrate the purchase of the whenua.
